The Sahara Desert is located in northern Africa and partially covers the territory of more than ten North African states. Morocco is one of the most convenient and safest countries to travel to the Sahara desert. Many imagine the desert as numerous dunes, but this is not so. Most of the desert is made up of stones and dry land, but beautiful dunes can not be found everywhere. In Morocco, you can look at the dunes in several places, the most famous and accessible of them is the place called Merzouga. Another place is the province of Zagora, a small town-village of Mhamid El Ghizlane, where you can take a trip to the more untouched places of the Sahara. It is unlikely that your trip to Morocco will include only the Sahara, therefore, as part of a two-week or less trip, it is more convenient to visit the desert in Merzouga (minimum 2 nights), but if you have 1 week or less you can allocate 1 night in Merzouga or Mhamid El Ghizlan Zagora.
How to get to Merzouga:
The best time to visit the desert is spring or autumn. It is very hot here in summer, and during the winter months, it can be cold even during the day. However, travelers visit the Sahara of Morocco at any time during the year.

Where to stay in Merzouga:
You will not be able to visit the desert in Merzouga without at least one overnight stay. The village of Merzouga is stretched along the main road, and the dunes of Erg Chebbi spread over the sides of the village. Riad hotels are available throughout the village. When you reach the desert, you have the choice to have an overnight in the camp inside the desert. The camps look like hotel rooms in the cities, they have comfortable beds, bathrooms, showers, and everything you need. It is a great experience to have an overnight under the stars in the desert. However, if you don’t like to spend the night in the camp, you can choose overnight in the Hotel/Riad in the village.
